OZEV EV Charger Grant UK 2026: Who's Eligible and How to Claim

What Is the OZEV Grant?

The EV Chargepoint Grant (formerly known as the OZEV grant or EVHS) is a UK government scheme that covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing a home EV charger, up to a maximum of £350 per charging socket.

The grant is administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and is designed to make home charging more accessible for people who might otherwise struggle to get a charger installed — specifically renters, flat owners, and landlords.

Important: The grant is currently funded until 31 March 2026. If you're eligible, apply sooner rather than later.

Who Is Eligible?

The grant is not available to all homeowners. If you own a detached, semi-detached, or terraced house, you're not eligible — the government considers these properties straightforward enough to install a charger without financial support.

You CAN claim if you are:

  • A renter (any property type) with landlord permission
  • A flat owner (leasehold or share of freehold) in a multi-unit building
  • A landlord installing chargers for tenants (separate landlord grant available)
  • A business with fewer than 250 employees (staff/fleet grant)

You also need:

  • An eligible electric vehicle (must be on OZEV's approved list — most mainstream EVs qualify, including all Tesla models)
  • Dedicated off-street parking at your property (a driveway, garage, or allocated parking space)
  • An OZEV-approved installer to do the work

You CANNOT claim if you:

  • Own a house (detached, semi, terraced, or bungalow) and are not renting
  • Have already claimed the maximum number of grants for your property
  • Don't have off-street parking

How Much Will You Save?

The grant covers 75% of the total cost (charger unit + installation), capped at £350.

Here's how that works in practice:

The grant is deducted from your bill by the installer — you never have to pay the full amount upfront and claim it back.

How to Claim: Step by Step

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Make sure you meet the criteria above. The key questions: Do you rent, or own a flat in a multi-unit building? Do you have an eligible EV? Do you have off-street parking?

Step 2: Get a Quote from an Approved Installer

You must use an OZEV-approved installer. They'll visit your property, assess the installation requirements, and provide a quote. The installer handles the grant paperwork — you don't apply to OZEV yourself.

Step 3: Accept the Quote and Provide Your Details

Once you accept, your installer will ask for your contact details and submit them to OZEV. You'll receive an email from OZEV with a link to an online form where you provide details about your property and vehicle.

Step 4: Wait for Approval

OZEV will review your application. Once approved, your installer has 90 days to complete the work (they can request an extension if needed).

Step 5: Installation and Payment

Your installer completes the work, takes photographs, and submits the claim to OZEV. The grant amount is deducted from your bill before you pay — so you only ever pay the remaining balance.

Which Chargers Are Grant-Eligible?

All of the chargers we review on this site are OZEV-approved, including:

Tips for Getting the Most from the Grant

  1. Act before March 2026 — there's no guarantee the grant will be renewed after the current funding period
  2. Get multiple quotes — approved installers can vary significantly in their installation charges
  3. Check if your energy company offers additional incentives — some providers like Octopus Energy and British Gas offer cashback or discounts on charger installations
  4. Consider the total cost of ownership — a slightly more expensive charger with smart tariff integration (like the Ohme) can save you hundreds per year on electricity

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the grant if I own a house?

No. The household grant is only for renters and flat owners. If you own a house, you'll need to pay the full cost yourself. The typical total cost is £800–1,200 including installation.

Can I claim for more than one charger?

You can claim for one grant per parking space, and the property can have multiple claims if there are multiple eligible parking spaces.

Do I need to own the EV when I apply?

Yes. You must be the registered keeper of an eligible electric vehicle at the time of application.

Can my landlord apply instead of me?

Yes. There's a separate landlord grant that covers infrastructure costs. Your landlord can claim up to £350 per chargepoint socket, plus up to £30,000 for supporting infrastructure (like electrical upgrades).

What if I move house?

The grant is tied to the property, not you. If you move, the charger stays. You could potentially claim again at your new property if it's also eligible.
