The Tesla Wall Connector is the cheaper, simpler choice — for Tesla owners
If you drive a Tesla and charge on a fixed off-peak window — Octopus Go at 8.5p/kWh between 00:30 and 05:30, say, or EDF GoElectric at 6.99p/kWh between 23:00 and 06:00 — the Wall Connector does everything you need. Set the schedule once in the Tesla app, forget it. The 7.3-metre tethered cable reaches further than most rivals' standard offering, the four-year warranty is a year longer than the Hypervolt's base cover, and over-the-air updates mean the feature set isn't frozen at install.
Two caveats. First, the Tesla has no built-in RCD or surge protection; the installer adds both, and that can nudge install costs toward the higher end of the £400–£600 range. Second, IP44 is the lowest ingress rating in the catalogue. A sheltered garage wall is fine. A fully exposed west-facing wall that catches every storm — less so.
The deeper limitation is what the Tesla won't do. It cannot chase variable rates. On Octopus Agile, where prices shift every 30 minutes, you set one schedule and hope. The charger has no tariff awareness at all — it charges when you tell it to, and that is that.
The Hypervolt's case: weather, solar, and tariff smarts
The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro earns its £150 premium in three specific ways.
Build quality on an exposed wall. IP66 + IK10 means full jet-spray resistance and impact protection. If your consumer unit sits at the back of the house and the only viable cable run puts the charger on an unsheltered gable end, this rating is not a luxury — it is the spec that stops you worrying.
Solar diversion without extra hardware. The included CT clamp lets the Hypervolt route surplus generation into the car. It is not as sophisticated as the Zappi GLO's Eco+ mode — solar buyers with larger arrays should look at the Zappi vs Hypervolt comparison — but for a modest 3–4 kW system where you want some diversion without buying a separate box, it does the job.
Smart-tariff scheduling. The Hypervolt talks to variable tariffs and shifts charging to the cheapest slots automatically. On Agile, that is a meaningful advantage over the Tesla. On a flat off-peak window like Octopus Go, it is redundant — a manual schedule works identically and costs £150 less.
The grant changes the arithmetic for some buyers
The Tesla Wall Connector is not OZEV-approved. The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro is. For eligible renters and flat owners, the £500 OZEV grant covers the Hypervolt's £625 unit price and chips into the install costs too. That flips the equation entirely — the Hypervolt becomes the cheaper option and the more capable one. If you qualify for the grant, there is no reason to pick the Tesla unless you specifically want its app ecosystem and nothing else.
Cable length is not as clear-cut as it looks
The Tesla's 7.3-metre cable is generous out of the box. The Hypervolt's base model ships with 5 metres — adequate for a charger mounted beside the parking spot, tight for anything else. The 7.5-metre and 10-metre options cost more, pushing the Hypervolt's total price further from the Tesla's £475. If cable reach matters and budget is firm, the Tesla wins on pure value. If you need 10 metres — a long driveway, a detached garage — only the Hypervolt offers it.
The verdict
Buy the Tesla Wall Connector if:
- You drive a Tesla and want the native app without a second platform
- You charge on a fixed off-peak window and do not need tariff-chasing
- You have a sheltered mounting position and want the lowest upfront cost at £475
Buy the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro if:
- You qualify for the OZEV grant — the maths are not close
- Your mounting wall is exposed and needs IP66 + IK10 protection
- You have solar panels or a variable tariff and want the charger to manage both
For a Tesla owner with a garage, a Go tariff, and no solar panels, the Wall Connector is the right charger at £475. For everyone else — particularly grant-eligible buyers, non-Tesla drivers, or anyone whose wall takes weather — the Hypervolt at £625 is the more complete purchase. It rarely excels at any single thing, but it handles nearly everything competently, and that is a harder quality to find than it sounds.
