What the Pulsar Max buys with that flexibility
The Wallbox is the smaller, more capable unit. At 198 × 201 × 99 mm it is genuinely tiny — the kind of charger you mount between a gas meter and a downpipe without a second thought. IK10 impact resistance means it handles a knocked wheelie bin. Six colour options, if that matters to you.
More substantively, the Pulsar Max offers a 22kW three-phase mode. Fewer than 5% of UK homes have three-phase, but if yours does — or if you are planning a supply upgrade — the Pod Point cannot follow you there. The Solo 3S tops out at 7.4kW, full stop.
On the software side, neither charger is a tariff optimiser. Both offer scheduled charging through their respective apps. The Wallbox supports Octopus Intelligent Go, which lets Octopus shuffle your charging into cheap half-hour slots automatically. The Pod Point has no equivalent supplier integration. Both units carry five-year warranties. Both are OZEV-approved. Both have 5-metre cables and IP54 weather ratings. On paper, the hardware is close — the Wallbox edges it on size and three-phase capability, but neither has 4G or a longer cable option.
What the Pod Point's £999 actually buys
Convenience, and a certain peace of mind. Pod Point assigns a contractor, books the date, and handles the OZEV paperwork if you qualify. You do not compare three quotes. You do not chase an electrician who ghosts you the week before. For someone who finds that process genuinely daunting — renters dealing with landlords, first-time EV owners unsure what a consumer unit upgrade involves — the fixed-price model removes friction.
The trade-off is captive pricing. You cannot shop the install around. If your local NICEIC-registered sparky would do the job for £350, that saving is not available to you. Pod Point picks the contractor, and you get whoever is on the rota that week.
For OZEV-eligible buyers — renters and flat owners — the £500 grant brings the Pod Point's installed total to £499. That is a reasonable price for a charger fitted on the wall with a five-year warranty behind it. Solar and load management — a draw, mostly
Both chargers offer adaptive load management to protect your main fuse. Both claim solar compatibility, though neither does it with the sophistication of a myenergi Zappi GLO. The Wallbox's Eco-Smart solar mode requires a separate Power Meter accessory at extra cost. The Pod Point's solar support is basic — it works, but it does not divert surplus generation in the way a dedicated solar charger would.

Buy the Wallbox Pulsar Max if:
- You are comfortable getting your own install quotes — the total will likely match or beat the Pod Point's £999
- Your property has three-phase supply, or might in the future
- Wall space is tight and you need the smallest possible unit
Buy the Pod Point Solo 3S if:
- You want a single fixed price with no quote-shopping
- You are a renter or flat owner using the OZEV grant and want the simplest possible process
- You would rather pay a premium than coordinate a tradesperson yourself
For most buyers, the Wallbox Pulsar Max is the better charger at the better price. The Pod Point's installed model solves a real problem — but it is a logistics problem, not a hardware one. If you can spend twenty minutes on Checkatrade, the £486 stays in your pocket.
