The Easee assumes your consumer unit is a headache. It packs a Type B RCD and open-PEN detection into a 1.5 kg box, trimming £100–£200 from a typical install. The GivEnergy assumes you have a home battery sitting in the garage, ready to dump cheap overnight electricity into the car the next afternoon. The Easee's real price is lower than it looks
At £489, the Easee One is not cheap by the standards of a 7.4 kW single-phase charger. The Tesla Wall Connector undercuts it at £475; the VCHRGD Seven Pro does more for £430. But the Easee's integrated protection means many electricians can skip an external RCD and a separate PEN fault device — components that routinely add £100–£200 to the labour bill. Factor that in and the all-in cost often lands below the GivEnergy's, not above it.
The GivEnergy, by contrast, carries no such protection in the box. Its install cost sits in the same £400–£600 band, with no particular shortcut. If your consumer unit already has appropriate RCD coverage, the saving evaporates and the two chargers are closer to parity. If it doesn't, the Easee pulls meaningfully ahead on total spend.
When the GivEnergy earns its place
Strip away the battery integration and the GivEnergy is a £444 tethered charger with a basic app, Wi-Fi connectivity, and scheduled charging. Competent, unremarkable. The Rolec EVO does roughly the same job for £356 with a longer warranty.
Add a home battery — GivEnergy's own, or a compatible third-party unit — and the picture changes. The charger can pull stored energy from the battery into the car. Most chargers can only divert live solar; the GivEnergy draws from what was stored hours earlier, which means cheap-rate electricity bought at 02:00 on Octopus Go at 8.5p/kWh can charge the car at 17:00 without touching the grid's peak rate. That is a tangible, recurring saving — and almost no other sub-£500 charger offers it.
It also integrates with GivEnergy's monitoring portal, giving a single dashboard for solar generation, battery state, household consumption, and EV charging. For households already embedded in that ecosystem, the charger is the obvious final piece.
For households without a battery, the case collapses. The app is basic next to the Ohme Home Pro or Hypervolt Home 3 Pro. There is no live tariff API — scheduling is manual, same as the Easee. The IP65 rating is a point in its favour over the Easee's IP54, but that alone is not worth choosing a charger around.
Neither charger is smart enough for variable tariffs
Both the Easee One and the GivEnergy EV Charger support scheduled charging — set a window, the charger obeys. On a fixed off-peak tariff like Octopus Go or EDF GoElectric, that is sufficient. Set the schedule once; forget it.
On a half-hourly tariff like Octopus Agile, neither charger can chase the cheapest slots automatically. The Easee has a built-in eSIM with lifetime 4G — useful where Wi-Fi is patchy — but it still relies on a manual schedule. The verdict
Buy the Easee One if:
- Your consumer unit lacks a Type B RCD or PEN fault device — the built-in protection will likely save more than the £45 price gap
- You prefer an untethered socket and a clean wall when the car is away
- You want lifetime 4G backup for scheduling in a garage with poor Wi-Fi
Buy the GivEnergy EV Charger if:
- You have a GivEnergy or compatible home battery and want to charge the car from stored energy
- You are already using the GivEnergy monitoring portal and want one dashboard for everything
- You need IP65 weatherproofing on an exposed wall
For most buyers without a home battery, the Easee One is the more useful charger — its install savings are immediate and universal. The GivEnergy is a specialist. In the right home, with the right battery, it does something almost nothing else at this price can. Outside that setup, it is ordinary — and the field around it is not.
