What £86 buys — and what it doesn't

Both chargers deliver 7.4 kW on a single phase, both are OZEV-approved, and both have smart-tariff scheduling and solar diversion. The Ohme Home Pro costs £539. The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro costs £625. That £86 gap is the entire argument.

  • Ohme Home Pro — the tariff specialist. Direct API links to Octopus and British Gas, built-in 4G, £539. Earns its keep on variable rates.
  • Hypervolt Home 3 Pro — the generalist. IP66 + IK10 build, up to 10-metre cable, UK phone support, £625. Rarely best at any one thing, consistently good at all of them.

The Ohme's tariff advantage is real — and specific

The Ohme connects to your energy supplier's API. On Octopus Intelligent Go, that means the charger and Octopus talk directly: the supplier slots your charge into the cheapest half-hours within the 23:30–05:30 window at 8p/kWh, without you setting a timer or opening an app. Ohme is Octopus's officially recommended hardware for this tariff. That is not a marketing badge — it is a functional dependency. The charger receives price signals; it acts on them.

The Hypervolt supports smart-tariff scheduling through its own app, but it lacks that direct API handshake. You set a window; the charger charges within it. On a fixed off-peak tariff like Octopus Go — where the cheap rate is a predictable 00:30–05:30 block at 8.5p/kWh — both chargers do the same job. On Octopus Agile, where rates shift every 30 minutes, the Ohme tracks them; the Hypervolt cannot.

If you are on a variable tariff, or plan to be, the Ohme is the correct charger. It costs less and saves more. The £86 gap is not a close call — it is compounding in the wrong direction for the Hypervolt.

Where the Hypervolt earns its price

Two things.

First, the cable. The Ohme ships with 5 metres as standard. An 8-metre upgrade costs extra. The Hypervolt offers 5-metre, 7.5-metre, and 10-metre tethered options. If your parking spot is awkward — a long driveway, a side-return, a detached garage — 10 metres solves problems that 5 metres cannot. No extension, no second cable, no compromise. That is a practical consideration no spec sheet can argue away.

Second, the build. IP66 plus IK10 is the highest weather-and-impact rating in the home-charger field. IP66 means pressure-jet resistance; IK10 means it can take 20 joules of impact — roughly a football kicked hard, or a wheelie bin blown into it. The Ohme's IP65 is fine for rain. The Hypervolt's rating is fine for everything else. If your charger sits on an exposed wall beside a shared path, or in a spot where things get knocked about, the Hypervolt's casing is not a luxury.

The five-year warranty extension at £100 is also worth noting against the Ohme's fixed three years. Over a five-year ownership, that works out to an extra two years of cover for roughly £4 a month — decent insurance on a £625 unit.

Solar: neither is the specialist

Both chargers divert surplus solar. The Ohme does it natively; the Hypervolt includes a CT clamp. Both work. Connectivity: a small edge to the Ohme

The Ohme ships with a 4G SIM, active for three years. If your Wi-Fi does not reach the driveway — and a surprising number of garages sit in a dead zone — the charger stays online regardless. The Hypervolt relies on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It works, but if your router is two walls and a floor away, you may need a range extender. A minor point, but one that matters at 11 pm when the schedule fails to trigger.

Which to buy

Buy the Ohme Home Pro if:

  • You are on Octopus Intelligent Go, Agile, or any half-hourly variable tariff
  • Your parking spot is within 5 metres of the charger (or you are happy to pay for the 8-metre cable)
  • You want the lower price and the smarter software — a rare combination

Buy the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro if:

  • You need a cable longer than 8 metres — only the Hypervolt offers 10
  • Your charger sits in an exposed or high-traffic spot where IP66 + IK10 matters
  • You value UK-based phone support and want the option to extend to a 5-year warranty

For most Tesla owners on a smart tariff, the Ohme is the sharper buy. It costs £86 less, it talks to your supplier in a language the Hypervolt does not speak, and its built-in 4G removes the Wi-Fi question entirely. The Hypervolt is a fine charger — broad, competent, tough — but breadth is not what most buyers need. They need the right charger for their tariff, and at £539, the Ohme is it.
