Short answer: start with the Zappi GLO for an inverter-agnostic, solar-first setup; choose the Indra Smart PRO when value and included monitoring hardware matter; and favour the GivEnergy EV Charger when the property already uses a GivEnergy inverter or battery. The Wallbox Pulsar Max is the compact five-year-warranty option, but solar charging needs a separate compatible Wallbox meter. The Ohme Home Pro is the tariff-automation option for an eligible recent installation with a working CT clamp.

Those differences matter because solar compatible does not mean the same thing on every charger. Some read import and export through an included CT clamp, some need a separate energy meter, and some work best inside the manufacturer's inverter and battery ecosystem. The comparison below makes the required setup visible before you request an installation quote.

A diversion-capable charger can route measured surplus to the car during daylight hours. That energy has no grid-import cost, but it is not always economically free: using it in the car can mean giving up an export payment. Compare that payment with the import electricity avoided and whether the car is actually home while the panels generate. An off-peak top-up on Intelligent Go currently costs 8p/kWh.

How Solar Diversion Works

A solar diversion charger measures whether the property is importing or exporting. A CT (current transformer) clamp around a supply cable is one common route; a compatible energy meter or inverter data can provide the same decision signal. The charger then varies, pauses or resumes the session according to its selected mode. It does not need to communicate directly with the solar panels themselves.

Minimum Surplus and Grid Blending

A single-phase EV normally needs about 1.4kW (6A) before a surplus-only AC session can run. Wallbox Full Green, Ohme's documented surplus-only setup and GivEnergy Eco use that approximate threshold. Grid-blended modes can begin with less solar by making up the difference from the grid. On broken cloud, the charger may pause and later resume, so check both the mode and the behaviour you want—not just the word “solar” on the specification sheet.

Solar Plus an EV Tariff

Solar does not remove the need for a charging plan. During the day, prioritise measured surplus when its avoided import value is higher than the export payment forgone. Overnight, a suitable EV tariff can cover the shortfall; Intelligent Go currently lists 8p/kWh in its base off-peak window. Annual cost still depends on generation, household demand, mileage and when the car is home.

Solar Plus Battery Storage

If the home already uses a GivEnergy inverter or battery, its charger is the cleanest single-ecosystem option in this five-model shortlist. Zappi can coordinate with myenergi's libbi ecosystem, while other chargers may see a battery discharge as household surplus unless the battery controls are configured to prevent it. Ask the installer which device takes priority, whether the charger can drain the battery, and how to preserve any backup reserve.

  3. System fit — whether it works independently of the inverter and how it behaves alongside home-battery storage
  4. Tariff scheduling — how the charger covers overnight shortfalls when daylight surplus is not enough
  5. Cost and ownership evidence — current unit price, recorded installation range, warranty and material limitations
