The question is not which is the better charger. The Hypervolt is. The question is whether having someone else book the electrician is worth £374 — and a step down in features.
What you get for £625 versus £999
The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro is IP66 and IK10-rated — the highest weather and impact protection of any charger on the site. The Pod Point Solo 3S is IP54: fine for a sheltered wall, less reassuring on an exposed driveway. If the charger faces the road or sits below a gutter overflow, that gap matters.
Cable length is another plain difference. The Hypervolt offers 5-metre, 7.5-metre, and 10-metre tethered options. The Pod Point comes with 5 metres. If the consumer unit is on the far side of the house, or the parking spot sits awkwardly, the Hypervolt's 10-metre option solves a problem the Pod Point cannot.
On smart features, the Hypervolt integrates with smart tariffs — set it to charge during the cheap window on Octopus Go or EDF GoElectric, and it follows the schedule without manual intervention. It also ships with a CT clamp for solar diversion, included in the box. The Pod Point offers scheduled charging and lists solar compatibility, but there is no direct supplier API and no CT clamp in the package. For anyone on a time-of-use tariff or with panels on the roof, the Hypervolt does more — for less.
The case for paying Pod Point's price
It is not a large case, but it is a real one. Some people do not want to find a NAPIT-registered installer, compare three quotes, and coordinate a date. Pod Point takes a phone call, assigns an engineer from their network, and the charger appears on the wall. One transaction, one warranty, one point of contact for five years.
That five-year warranty is worth noting against the Hypervolt's standard three. Extending the Hypervolt to five years costs £100, which narrows the effective gap to £274 on a like-for-like warranty basis — though the Hypervolt still offers more for less.
The trade-off: you do not choose the installer. Pod Point assigns a contractor the week of. If the install needs non-standard work — a longer cable run, a fuse upgrade — the price rises, and you have no competing quote to lean on. Captive pricing cuts both ways.
For renters or flat owners eligible for the £500 OZEV grant, the Pod Point's £999 installed drops to £499 — a more competitive figure. The Hypervolt's £625 unit drops to £125, but you still need to pay for installation on top. Even so, a £125 unit plus a £400–£600 install comes to £525–£725 total — comparable or cheaper, and with a better charger on the wall.
When neither is quite right
If smart tariff automation is the priority — half-hourly rate chasing on Octopus Agile, say — the Ohme Home Pro at £539 does it better than either of these. If solar surplus diversion is the main event, the myenergi Zappi GLO at £599 has deeper logic. And if the budget is the constraint, the Tesla Wall Connector at £475 delivers 7.4kW with a longer cable for less than either — though it lacks OZEV approval. The Hypervolt's strength is that it does all of these things competently, if not best-in-field, at a price that leaves room for a proper install.
The verdict
Buy the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro if:
- You are happy to arrange your own installer — or already have one in mind
- You want smart tariff scheduling, solar diversion, or a cable longer than 5 metres
- You prefer the toughest build rating (IP66 + IK10) available on a domestic charger
Buy the Pod Point Solo 3S if:
- Arranging an electrician is the thing most likely to delay you getting a charger
- You value a single price, single call, single warranty — and accept the premium for it
- You are OZEV-eligible and the grant brings the installed price to £499
For most buyers, the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro is the stronger purchase. It costs £374 less, does more, and survives worse weather. The Pod Point Solo 3S is a fine charger wrapped in a convenience fee — and that fee is hard to justify once you have an installer's number in your phone.
