Why the Ohme's tariff integration matters more than £16
On a fixed off-peak window — Octopus Go at 8.5p/kWh between 00:30 and 05:30, say — both chargers can schedule a session to start and stop at the right times. The EO Mini Pro 3 handles that adequately through the ev.energy app.
On Octopus Agile, where prices shift every thirty minutes, the picture changes. The Ohme reads the day-ahead auction and slots your charge into the cheapest windows automatically. The EO cannot do this; it relies on a fixed schedule you set yourself. The saving on Agile varies night to night, but across a year it compounds.
The strongest case is Intelligent Go at 8p/kWh. The Ohme Home Pro is one of the chargers Octopus officially recommends for this tariff, meaning the supplier's own system can push extra cheap slots outside the standard 23:30–05:30 window. The EO Mini Pro 3 is not on that list. If Intelligent Go is your plan — and for most Tesla owners it should be — the Ohme is the only sensible pick from this pair.
The EO's case: size and British Gas
The EO Mini Pro 3 measures 215 × 140 × 100 mm. That is roughly A5. At 2.5 kg it is a kilogram lighter than the Ohme and meaningfully smaller in every dimension. For a narrow garage pillar, a recessed porch wall, or a spot beside a front door where aesthetics matter, the EO fits where competitors do not. The Wallbox Pulsar Max is often cited as compact at £513, but the EO is smaller still.
Then there is Hive Power+. If you are a British Gas customer on their EV Power+ tariff, the EO Mini Pro 3 credits back 25% of your charging costs. No other charger offers this. On British Gas EV Power at 9p/kWh off-peak, that cashback brings the effective rate to around 6.75p — competitive with EDF GoElectric at 6.99p, without needing to switch supplier. It is a narrow advantage, but a real one for those already inside that ecosystem.
The things that count against the EO
EO is retiring its own app and migrating users to ev.energy. That is not catastrophic — ev.energy is a capable platform — but it means the software experience you read about in older reviews is not the one you will use. The transition introduces uncertainty: feature parity is not guaranteed on day one, and support during migrations is historically uneven across the industry.
The EO's IP54 rating is a step below the Ohme's IP65. Both will survive a British winter, but IP54 offers protection against splashing water rather than sustained low-pressure jets. If your charger sits exposed on a front wall rather than sheltered in a garage, the Ohme's rating is preferable.
Power output is 7.2kW versus 7.4kW. The practical difference on a nightly charge is minutes, not hours — but it is there, and the slower charger costs only £16 less.
Which to buy
Buy the Ohme Home Pro if:
- You are on, or plan to switch to, Intelligent Go or Octopus Agile
- You want tariff optimisation that runs without you thinking about it
- Your charger will sit on an exposed wall — IP65 and a built-in 4G SIM for three years give it an edge in awkward locations
Buy the EO Mini Pro 3 if:
- Wall space is the binding constraint — nothing else this capable is this small
- You are on British Gas Hive Power+ and want the 25% cashback
- You prefer a wired Ethernet fallback alongside Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
For most Tesla owners, the Ohme Home Pro is the right £16 to spend. Its tariff integration does work the EO cannot, and the savings accumulate from the first week. The EO earns its place only when physical space or British Gas loyalty tips the balance — and in those specific cases, it earns it decisively. If neither condition applies and you want to spend less, the Tesla Wall Connector at £475 is the quieter, cheaper default.
