The £99 between doing something now and waiting

The Ohme Home Pro at £539 is built to cut your electricity bill the night you plug it in — direct API links to Octopus, automatic half-hourly price chasing, the lot. The Zaptec Go 2 at £638 is built for a grid that doesn't quite exist yet — marketed as V2G-ready, MID-metered, OCPP-compliant, ready for a future where your car sells power back to the house. The £99 gap between them is really a question of temperament: do you want returns now, or optionality later?

Why the Ohme earns back its price and then some

The Ohme's edge is not subtle. It has direct API integration with Octopus Energy and British Gas, meaning it doesn't just follow a schedule — it responds to live pricing. On Octopus Intelligent Go, the charger is officially recommended by Octopus and automatically slots your charge into the 8p/kWh off-peak window between 23:30 and 05:30. On Octopus Agile, where rates shift every thirty minutes, the Ohme chases the cheapest slots without you lifting a finger. The Zaptec can schedule a charge — set it to start at midnight, stop at five — but it cannot follow a moving price. On Agile, that difference alone can amount to several pounds a month.

The Ohme also carries a built-in 4G SIM, active for three years at no extra cost. The Zaptec matches this with its own subscription-free 4G. Both will work at the end of a long driveway where Wi-Fi gives up — a genuine consideration for rural installs.

Where the Ohme concedes ground: its warranty runs three years against the Zaptec's five. And its standard cable is 5 metres, with an 8-metre option at extra cost. For most single-garage setups, 5 metres is fine. For a double drive with the consumer unit on the far wall, measure first.

What V2G-ready actually means in 2026

The Zaptec Go 2 publishes ISO 15118 communication support, but Zaptec says it cannot currently be registered as a UK V2G installation. That sounds significant — and it is, on paper. Vehicle-to-grid would let your Tesla's battery export stored energy back through the charger during peak-rate hours, offsetting your bill or earning credit. The MID-approved meter inside the Zaptec makes that metering legally billable, which is a prerequisite for any future V2G tariff scheme.

The problem: AC V2G in the UK remains embryonic. The car needs to support it, the DNO needs to permit it, and the tariff product needs to exist. None of those boxes is reliably ticked for most households today. If you're the sort of person who bought a heat pump before the grants arrived — comfortable being early, happy to wait — the Zaptec is a defensible choice. If you'd rather your charger earn its keep from day one, it isn't.

Tethered versus untethered — a practical split

The Ohme is tethered: the cable is permanently attached, you grab it and plug in. The Zaptec is untethered: a Type 2 socket on the wall, bring your own cable. Tethered is more convenient for a single household — no cable to coil, no boot rummage. Untethered suits shared spaces, landlords with multiple tenants, or anyone who wants to swap cable lengths without changing the unit. Buy the Ohme Home Pro if:

  • You're on, or moving to, a smart tariff — especially Intelligent Go or Agile
  • You want a tethered charger that automates your charging without any manual scheduling

Buy the Zaptec Go 2 if:

  • V2G readiness matters to you and you're willing to wait for the ecosystem to catch up
  • You need an untethered socket — for a shared drive, a rental property, or flexibility with cable lengths
  • The five-year warranty and MID-approved meter are important for your setup — particularly if you reclaim charging costs from an employer

For most Tesla owners on a single-phase supply, the Ohme Home Pro is the more useful charger today. It costs £99 less, it talks to your tariff, and it starts saving money the first night. The Zaptec is a thoughtful piece of hardware with a longer warranty and a credible bet on V2G — but a bet is what it remains. The Ohme is the one to put on the wall.
