V2G and Vehicle-to-Home Charging UK 2026: What's Real

For most UK buyers, bidirectional charging is not a reason to delay a conventional charger. Here is what works now and what still has to line up.
The short answer
For a UK buyer today, V2H or V2G is not a reason to delay a conventional home charger. A working bidirectional setup needs four things to align: a compatible car, genuinely bidirectional hardware, an energy service that supports the pairing, and the required network approval. A charger described as “ready” does not complete that chain.
There are real UK deployments. They are narrow rather than mainstream.
V2L, V2H and V2G are different
- Vehicle-to-load (V2L) powers an appliance from a socket or adaptor on the car. It does not connect the vehicle to the home's fixed wiring or export to the grid.
- Vehicle-to-home (V2H) supplies part of the home's electrical system. Backup operation and grid-connected operation are separate capabilities and must be designed into the installation.
- Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) lets an authorised service import and export energy through the grid connection.
Hyundai, for example, describes the Ioniq 5's V2L output as power for electrical devices. That is useful, but it is not evidence that an arbitrary UK V2H or V2G charger will work with the car. Hyundai explains the distinction in its Ioniq 5 material.
What works in the UK now
Octopus Power Pack is the clearest current domestic example. Octopus presently lists one compatible combination: a V2G-enabled BYD Dolphin with its V2G-enabled Zaptec Pro installation. Its published conditions also include a smart meter, G99 approval, a regular plug-in commitment and a monthly import allowance.
The proposition is free EV charging through bill credits when Octopus controls charging and export. It is not a general V2G tariff that can be paired with any vehicle or wallbox. Tesla is not on the current compatibility list.
Hardware labels need care
Wallbox Quasar 2
The Wallbox Quasar 2 is a bidirectional DC product intended for compatible vehicles. Wallbox's current global page lists up to 12.8kW and asks prospective buyers to register for updates; it does not establish open UK retail availability for every vehicle. Treat vehicle support, UK certification, installer availability and final installed cost as project-specific checks. See Wallbox's current product information.
“V2G-ready” AC chargers
The NexBlue Point 2 and Zaptec Go 2 support modern communication features, but ISO 15118 support alone is not bidirectional power conversion, export certification or a live V2G service.
Zaptec is unusually clear about this: its UK guidance says a Go 2 cannot currently be registered as a V2G installation under UK rules and that a complete certified system is required. “Ready” should therefore mean possible groundwork for a future ecosystem, not V2G promised by a firmware update. Grid rules, not a blanket mandate
There is no March 2025 rule requiring every new UK commercial charger above 22kW to provide V2G. The government's residential chargepoint specification sets minimum requirements for supported installations, while its smart charging action plan describes the work needed to scale flexibility and bidirectional charging.
Exporting generation also changes the network conversation. Domestic V2G systems may require G99 approval rather than the simpler notification used for an ordinary one-way charger. The installer and service provider should define that route before equipment is ordered.
What this means for a Tesla household
Tesla's current UK home-energy material covers one-way vehicle charging, solar coordination and Powerwall. The current Octopus V2G pairing does not include a Tesla. Do not buy a bidirectional charger on the assumption that a later software update will make a present UK Tesla export to the house or grid.

The decision today
Buy for the functions available now: reliable charging, an appropriate cable, useful scheduling and solar diversion if the property can use it. The solar-charger guide and tariff comparison cover those decisions.
If V2G is essential, start with the energy service's live compatibility list and work backwards to the car, charger, installer and DNO approval. If it is simply an interesting future option, record the requirement but do not pay a large premium for the word “ready”.
