The GivEnergy's one trick — and why it matters
Most home chargers can divert live solar surplus into the car. The GivEnergy does that too, but its distinguishing feature is battery-to-EV charging: energy bought cheaply overnight, stored in a home battery, then fed to the car the next day. That decouples your charging from the grid in a way few other units manage.
If you have a GivEnergy battery — or a compatible third-party one — this is a meaningful capability. Buy cheap units on EDF GoElectric at 6.99p/kWh, bank them in the battery, charge the car at teatime without touching peak rates. The GivEnergy monitoring portal ties the whole system together: solar generation, battery state, EV draw, all in one view.
Without a home battery, none of this applies. The GivEnergy becomes a £444 charger with a 5-metre cable, a basic app, schedule-only tariff integration, and no live supplier API. Functional, but unremarkable. Where the Tesla Wall Connector earns its keep
The Tesla Wall Connector does nothing exotic. It charges the car, it talks to the Tesla app, it schedules sessions. That is the entire proposition — and for most buyers, it is enough.
The 7.3-metre tethered cable reaches further than any rival in this selection. The four-year warranty beats the GivEnergy's three. Power sharing across up to six units on one circuit suits households with multiple EVs. Over-the-air updates have added features since launch without requiring an electrician's return visit.
Its weaknesses are well-known. IP44 is the lowest weatherproofing rating in this round-up — the GivEnergy's IP65 is fully sealed against dust and water jets. The Tesla lacks built-in RCD or surge protection, so your installer adds both, which can nudge install costs toward the upper end of the £400–£600 range. And it is not OZEV-approved, so the £500 grant is off the table.
That OZEV point matters if you are an eligible renter or flat owner. The GivEnergy is approved: the £500 grant covers its £444 unit price outright and contributes to install costs too. The Tesla offers no such subsidy.
Smart tariffs — neither charger excels
Both chargers support scheduled charging, and both lack live tariff API integration. On a fixed-window tariff like Octopus Go — 8.5p/kWh between 00:30 and 05:30 — either charger handles the job: set the schedule once, forget it. On a variable-rate tariff like Octopus Agile, where rates shift every half hour, neither charger can chase the cheapest slots automatically.

- You have a home battery — GivEnergy or compatible — and want to charge the car from stored energy
- You are an eligible renter or flat owner and the £500 OZEV grant matters to you
- Your charger sits on a fully exposed wall and IP65 weatherproofing is non-negotiable
For the majority of buyers reading this page — people who charge a car from the grid, overnight, without a home battery — the Tesla Wall Connector is the more complete product.
