The £163 question — and whether V2G answers it
The Tesla Wall Connector costs £475, comes tethered with a 7.3-metre cable, and talks to the Tesla app already on your phone. The Zaptec Go 2 costs £638 — £163 more — arrives untethered, and stakes its pitch on being an AC charger that publishes ISO 15118 communication support. Same 7.4 kW on single-phase. Same install bracket of £400–£600. The gap is entirely about what each unit promises beyond pushing kilowatt-hours into your battery.

What V2G-ready means — and what it does not
Zaptec's V2G-ready marketing is part of the case for the premium, but its published ISO 15118 support is not certification to export. Zaptec says the Go 2 cannot currently be registered as a UK V2G installation and requires a certified complete system. Buy it for the MID meter, 4G, warranty and three-phase support available now.
If V2G does arrive within the Zaptec's five-year warranty window, early adopters stand to earn from grid balancing — potentially enough to recoup the £163 gap and then some. If it does not, you have paid more for an untethered charger with a good meter and a nice warranty. That is not a disaster, but it is not a bargain either. The honest framing: this is a speculative premium, not a functional one.

Where the Tesla Wall Connector earns its keep
At £475 the Tesla Wall Connector is one of the cheaper smart chargers on the market, and it comes with the longest tethered cable in the category at 7.3 metres. That reach matters on driveways where the consumer unit sits at the far end of the house. No fumbling with a separate cable in the rain — you lift, plug, walk inside.
The Tesla app handles scheduling, charge history, and power sharing across up to six units on a single circuit. Over-the-air updates have added features since launch without an electrician's return visit. On a fixed off-peak tariff like Octopus Go — set the schedule to 00:30–05:30 and leave it — the Wall Connector does everything you need.
Its weaknesses are specific. It cannot chase half-hourly pricing on Octopus Agile; for that, the Ohme Home Pro at £539 is the right tool. It has no solar diversion without extra hardware. And it is not OZEV-approved, so eligible renters and flat owners cannot claim the £500 grant against it. The Zaptec is OZEV-approved — and at £638, the grant covers the unit outright and chips into the install cost too. That changes the arithmetic for grant-eligible buyers considerably.
The grant factor
This is the one scenario where the Zaptec's higher sticker price becomes irrelevant. If you qualify for the £500 OZEV grant — renters and flat owners — the Tesla is simply ineligible. The Zaptec's £638 is wiped out by the grant and then some, leaving you with a V2G-ready, MID-metered charger at a net cost below what most people pay for a basic unit. Grant-eligible buyers should not be looking at the Tesla Wall Connector at all.

Buy the Tesla Wall Connector if:
- You own a Tesla and want the native app experience at the lowest price — £475.
- You prefer a tethered charger with a 7.3-metre cable and no loose leads.
- You charge on a fixed off-peak tariff and have no interest in V2G speculation.
Buy the Zaptec Go 2 if:
- You qualify for the OZEV grant — the £500 covers the unit and contributes to install, making the Zaptec the cheaper total package.
- You want V2G-readiness label on the wall now, ready for when services mature.
- You value the MID-approved meter for workplace reimbursement or landlord billing.
For most owner-occupiers charging a Tesla on a fixed tariff, the Wall Connector is the right answer. It is cheaper, tethered, and does the nightly job without fuss. The Zaptec Go 2 is a more interesting product — but interesting and necessary are not the same thing. Pay the £163 if you believe in the V2G timeline, or if the OZEV grant makes the decision for you. Otherwise, the Tesla earns the wall.
