Verdict

The lowest fixed overnight rate in this comparison, across the longest guaranteed window. 6.99p/kWh during 11pm–6am undercuts Intelligent Go and gives the charger another hour. What EDF gives up is the machinery: no required vehicle API, no supplier-controlled schedule and a fixed product whose live term should be checked before switching. Take EDF when the rate and window lead the decision. Choose Octopus when you want the charging handled for you. Compare them directly.

What the rate means in practice.

The cheapest fixed overnight rate in this list, across the longest window: 6.99p/kWh from 11pm to 6am, seven hours. That combination beats Octopus Intelligent Go, which charges 8p across six. EDF's supply is backed by nuclear and renewable generation, so it is also one of the lower-carbon options here — but the reason to take it is the rate.

Best for: Anyone whose priority is the cheapest guaranteed overnight unit rate, and who has a large battery or a long commute that needs more than five or six hours to refill.

How It Works

GoElectric is a plain time-of-use tariff. Between 11pm and 6am you pay 6.99p/kWh. For the remaining seventeen hours you pay 28.91p/kWh. No smart charger integration, no vehicle API, no scheduling algorithm — set a timer and let it run.

That simplicity is the trade. Octopus and OVO will find cheap half-hours for you; EDF gives you a longer cheap window and expects you to use it.

Who It Suits

Seven hours at 7kW is 49kWh — enough to refill a Model S from nearly flat inside one window, which no five-hour tariff can do. It suits high-mileage drivers, large batteries, and anyone who would rather have a wide window than a clever one. It also suits EV owners who care where the electricity comes from: EDF's generation mix is predominantly nuclear and renewable.

The catch is the contract. GoElectric is a 12-month fix with exit fees, so the rate that makes it worth taking is also the thing you are locked into if the market moves.
