British Gas EV Power vs Octopus Intelligent Go: Which Fits Your Home?

British Gas offers a simple five-hour window; Octopus adds a lower rate and managed scheduling. Compare the whole-home cost, eligibility and charger fit.

The short answer

Choose Octopus Intelligent Go when you want the lower standard EV rate and the supplier to handle scheduling. Choose British Gas EV Power when you already prefer British Gas, want a plain clock-based tariff, or have a compatible setup that qualifies for its separate Power+ discount.

The ordinary headline comparison favours Octopus: 8p/kWh across 11:30pm–5:30am, against 9p/kWh across 12am–5am. The whole-home answer is less automatic. British Gas records a lower representative peak rate, while standing charges and the exact quote vary by region.

These are the site's current canonical facts. Both suppliers quote postcode-dependent prices, so the final decision should use the live quote and your own household usage.

What the rate difference is worth

On the shared default model, British Gas EV Power puts EV electricity at £257 a year. Intelligent Go puts it at £229. That isolates the car and assumes the modelled off-peak share is achieved.

The full household estimates are £1,205 for EV Power and £1,257 for Intelligent Go. Those figures also include the representative household load and standing charge. Change the mileage, vehicle efficiency, daytime electricity use or postcode and the ranking can move.

This is why the off-peak rate is a useful filter, not a complete answer. A household with electric heating, a home office and little ability to move appliances overnight can care more about the peak rate than a low-mileage EV does about one penny on its charging rate.

Scheduling and compatibility

British Gas EV Power

The base tariff is simple. Electricity used in the published five-hour window is billed at the lower rate, including household use. Set a schedule in the car or charger and leave it there. Any charger that can reliably follow that schedule is suitable.

British Gas also markets Power+, which discounts eligible smart charging on a compatible setup. Treat that as a separate product condition. Confirm the exact vehicle, charger, smart-meter mode and tariff before putting the additional discount into a savings calculation.

Intelligent Octopus Go

Octopus can manage charging through a supported vehicle or charger integration. You set the target and ready-by time; the system allocates charging within the product rules. A Tesla can usually use its vehicle integration, so it does not need an Octopus-specific wallbox.

Since May 2026, managed EV charging is capped at six hours in a midday-to-midday period. The extra half-hours can still move around the day, but they do not create an unlimited cheap allocation.

Which charger suits each tariff

For EV Power's base window, a Tesla Wall Connector or any other dependable scheduled charger is enough. A supported smart charger becomes more relevant if Power+ is part of the plan.

For Intelligent Go, the Ohme Home Pro is the clearest charger-led automation route. Tesla owners can instead let the vehicle integration do the work and choose hardware on cable, price and installation fit.

The charger does not set the electricity price. Its job is to capture the rate reliably. Compare the best chargers for smart tariffs after choosing how much automation you actually need.

The verdict

For most eligible EV drivers, Intelligent Go is the stronger default. The standard rate is lower, the window is longer and managed scheduling removes a recurring task. British Gas EV Power remains a sensible choice for a household that wants to stay with British Gas, values its peak-rate structure or qualifies for a Power+ arrangement that changes the arithmetic.

Do not switch on the supplier name alone. Put your mileage, household use and postcode into the EV tariff comparison, then compare the two live quotes on the same assumptions.
