Best Time to Charge Your EV UK: Off-Peak Hours (2026)

Compare current UK EV-tariff windows, check whether they fit your charging need and model the whole household bill before switching.

The short answer

The cheapest time is the period your chosen tariff prices lowest and your car can reliably use. For fixed-window products that is usually overnight. Managed and dynamic products may schedule different slots, so there is no single UK-wide cheapest hour.

Agile prices change in half-hour periods, so its figures are indicative rather than a fixed promise. Managed products may calculate EV charging separately from the rest of the home. ScottishPower says many meters follow GMT, so the EV Saver clock window can appear as 1am to 6am during BST; selected SMETS1 meters keep midnight to 5am.

Model the whole bill

The cheap EV rate is not the whole decision. Non-EV household use may sit at the peak rate and the standing charge is postcode-dependent. On the shared default model, using 10,000 miles, the default vehicle efficiency, 2,700kWh of household use excluding the EV and all EV charging placed off-peak, Intelligent Go produces:

  • EV electricity: £229 a year
  • Whole-home annual total: £1,257
  • Difference from the representative standard-rate baseline: £403

Replace the defaults with your mileage, efficiency, household use and achievable off-peak share. A household using more electricity in the daytime can reach a different result even when the EV rate looks excellent.

Is the window long enough?

Work from the energy you need, not the battery's advertised full capacity:

Energy required = usable battery capacity × percentage to add

Ideal charging time = energy required ÷ actual charging power

Allow for charging losses and any power reduction caused by load management. A 20% to 80% top-up uses 60% of the usable battery, while an ordinary daily replenishment may be much smaller. A fixed window does not need to refill the car from empty every night; it needs to replace the energy you use between plug-ins.

If the calculation is longer than the tariff window, the choices are simple: accept some peak-rate charging, split the charge across nights, choose a longer fixed window or use a compatible managed tariff. Do not assume bonus slots will always appear.

Three safe ways to schedule

Use the vehicle scheduler

This can be enough for a fixed window, provided the vehicle reliably starts and stops when expected. Confirm whether the car uses a start time, departure time or both.

Use the charger app

Chargers such as the Ohme Home Pro, Hypervolt Home 3 Pro and Wallbox Pulsar Max can schedule sessions. Direct supplier integrations are useful for managed tariffs, but compatibility can change, so check the current list before purchase.

Let the energy supplier manage the session

Some products ask when the car must be ready and choose slots for you. The charger or vehicle must remain online, and the achieved price depends on the product rules.

For regular 3-pin charging, use the vehicle manufacturer's approved portable equipment and have the socket and circuit assessed by a qualified electrician. A generic plug-in timer is not a substitute for EV-rated equipment or a suitable installation.

Daytime and solar charging

A dynamic tariff can be cheaper outside the usual overnight period, but tomorrow's cheap slots are not guaranteed. Solar can reduce grid imports when the car is home during generation; exported electricity still has an opportunity value, so solar charging is not automatically free.
