In practice, once you add a standard install to the EO, the total-cost gap can shrink to almost nothing — or even flip, if your electrician quotes at the higher end.

The comparison, then, is less about money and more about control. Do you want Pod Point to handle everything, or do you want to pick the installer, the charger position, and the schedule yourself?

What the Pod Point's £999 buys — and what it doesn't

The Pod Point package is straightforward: one price, one call, one visit. A five-year warranty — the longest of any installed package on the site — covers both hardware and the work. For a buyer who finds the process of sourcing an electrician genuinely off-putting, this is the product. It removes decisions.

The trade-off is that it also removes choices. You cannot select your installer. Pod Point assigns a contractor from their network, typically the week of the appointment. If the standard install assumptions don't match your property — longer cable run, consumer-unit upgrade, external trunking — extras appear on the quote. And because there is no hardware-only SKU, you cannot compare Pod Point's install labour cost against an independent NICEIC electrician. The price is the price.

The charger itself is competent but unexceptional: 7.4 kW, Wi-Fi only, scheduled charging through a basic app, adaptive load management. No supplier API, no Ethernet fallback, no solar CT clamp in the box. For £999 installed, the hardware spec is mid-range at best.

Where the EO earns its keep — size and flexibility

The EO Mini Pro 3 measures 215 × 140 × 100 mm. That is roughly A5 — smaller than a hardback novel. At 2.5 kg, it can mount in spaces where nothing else will: beside a narrow garage door, on a recessed brick pier, tucked into an alcove. If wall space is the constraint, the EO is often the only viable option.

Beyond size, the EO offers more connectivity than the Pod Point: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and optional 4G. The Ethernet port matters in garages with thick walls or metal doors where Wi-Fi drops. It ships with a CT clamp for basic solar diversion — not as sophisticated as the myenergi Zappi GLO's Eco+ mode, but included at no extra cost. And it supports smart tariff scheduling for fixed-window tariffs like Octopus Go and EDF GoElectric.

One caveat: EO is retiring its own app and migrating users to ev.energy. The platform you buy into today is not the one on the older marketing materials. That is not necessarily bad — ev.energy is a capable platform — but it is worth knowing before you commit.

British Gas buyers get a structural discount

No other charger on the market offers a supplier-linked cashback at that level. The OZEV grant changes the EO's maths

Both chargers are OZEV-approved. For eligible renters and flat owners, the £500 grant covers the EO's £523 unit price almost entirely — leaving just £23 for the hardware and the full grant contribution eating into install costs. On the Pod Point, the same £500 reduces the installed price to £499. The grant makes both cheaper, but it makes the EO dramatically so.

Buy the EO Mini Pro 3 if:

• You want to choose your own installer and control the total cost

Buy the Pod Point Solo 3S if:

• You want a single price, a single call, and no decisions about electricians
• A five-year warranty on hardware and installation matters to you
• You have a straightforward install and no interest in tariff automation or solar diversion

For most buyers, the EO Mini Pro 3 paired with a local NICEIC installer is the better deal — more connectivity, a CT clamp in the box, and the freedom to shop the install. The Pod Point is a premium for convenience, and that premium is fair only if the convenience is what you are actually paying for.
