The £181 battery question

These two chargers occupy different corners of the market, and most buyers will know within a paragraph which one is theirs. The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro costs £625, does a bit of everything — smart tariffs, solar diversion, load management — and does all of it competently. The GivEnergy EV Charger costs £444 and has one unusual trick: it can pull stored energy from a home battery into your car. That trick is either the entire reason to buy it, or it is irrelevant. There is very little middle ground.

  • Hypervolt Home 3 Pro — £625. The generalist. Smart tariff scheduling, solar CT clamp included, IP66 + IK10 build, cable options up to 10 metres. Buy it when you want one charger to handle whatever comes next.
  • GivEnergy EV Charger — £444. The specialist. Battery-to-EV charging, GivEnergy portal integration, basic scheduling. Buy it when you already own a home battery and want the whole system talking.

When the GivEnergy earns its keep

Battery-to-EV is rare. Most home chargers can divert live solar surplus — the Hypervolt does this, the Zappi GLO does it better — but they cannot reach into a battery that charged overnight at 8p/kWh on Octopus Go and push that stored energy into the car at teatime. The GivEnergy can. If you have a GivEnergy battery system, or a compatible third-party unit, this creates a genuinely different energy flow: cheap grid power goes into the battery at 00:30, and the battery feeds the car at 17:00, all without touching peak-rate electricity.

That is a meaningful saving for the right household. If you are already inside the GivEnergy ecosystem — inverter, battery, monitoring portal — the EV charger slots in as another node. The portal shows generation, storage, house load, and car charging in one place. No other £444 charger offers that level of whole-home visibility.

The catch is obvious. Without a home battery, this charger is a £444 box with a basic app, schedule-only tariff control, and a 5-metre cable. At that price point, the VCHRGD Seven Pro at £430 packs smarter features, and the Sync Energy Wall Charger 2 at £400 undercuts it with a cleaner software stack. The GivEnergy's value proposition lives and dies with that battery on your wall.

What the Hypervolt's £181 premium buys

Quite a lot, as it turns out. Start with the build: IP66 plus IK10 is the highest combined weather and impact rating in the residential charger market. If your charger sits on a front wall beside a tight driveway, that IK10 impact resistance is not cosmetic — it is the difference between a scuff and a warranty claim. The GivEnergy manages IP65, which is perfectly weatherproof but offers no impact standard.

Then there is cable length. The Hypervolt offers 5-metre, 7.5-metre, and 10-metre tethered options. The 10-metre version is the longest available on any charger in our catalogue — useful if the consumer unit sits at the opposite end of the house from the drive. The GivEnergy comes with 5 metres. That is it.

Smart tariff integration is the other gap. The Hypervolt talks to your energy supplier and can schedule around variable rates. It is not as sharp as the Ohme Home Pro at half-hourly price-chasing on Octopus Agile, but it handles fixed off-peak windows — EDF GoElectric at 6.99p/kWh between 23:00 and 06:00, say — without fuss. The GivEnergy can only set manual time schedules. If your tariff window shifts, you adjust it yourself.

Finally, support. Hypervolt is UK-designed and UK-built, with a phone line that reportedly picks up in seconds. The three-year warranty extends to five for £100 — a modest outlay for two extra years of cover. The GivEnergy carries three years, not extendable.

Solar without a battery

Both chargers divert surplus solar, but neither is the strongest option for that job alone. The Hypervolt includes a CT clamp at no extra cost, which is a fair saving over chargers that charge for one. The GivEnergy offers live solar diversion too. For dedicated solar-surplus charging, though, the Zappi GLO at £599 remains the standard — its Eco+ mode waits for genuine surplus before drawing any grid power at all. Which to buy

Buy the GivEnergy EV Charger if:

  • You own a GivEnergy home battery, or a compatible third-party battery, and want battery-to-EV charging
  • You are already inside the GivEnergy monitoring portal and want your EV charger on the same dashboard
  • You want to spend £444, not £625, and the battery integration justifies the trade-offs in app quality and cable length

Buy the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro if:

  • You do not have a home battery — or do not plan to get one soon
  • You want smart tariff scheduling, a long cable option, and the toughest build quality in the category
  • You value UK phone support and an extendable warranty

For most buyers, the Hypervolt is the better charger. It costs more because it does more, and it does all of it to a standard that justifies the £625 ask. The GivEnergy is the exception that proves the rule — a specialist tool that, in the right home, does something the Hypervolt simply cannot. Own a battery? Buy the GivEnergy. Own anything else? Buy the Hypervolt.
