A £13 gap hiding two different philosophies

The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro costs £625. The Zaptec Go 2 costs £638. Thirteen pounds apart — close enough that the price difference is irrelevant. What separates them is temperament. The Hypervolt is a charger designed for the home you have. The Zaptec is a charger designed for the grid you might get.

What the Hypervolt does better right now

The Hypervolt is a tethered charger with cable options up to 10 metres — the longest on any UK home unit. You plug in, walk away, and the cable is always there. The Zaptec is untethered only: you supply and carry your own Type 2 lead. For a charger mounted on a garage wall or driveway post, that distinction matters every wet evening.

Build quality is not close. IP66 plus IK10 means the Hypervolt is rated against powerful water jets and physical impact — a genuine advantage if your charger faces a shared drive or is exposed to the elements. The Zaptec's IP54 handles rain, but not a stray football or a reversing mishap.

Solar owners get a CT clamp included with the Hypervolt — no extra hardware, no extra cost. It handles basic solar diversion out of the box. It is not as sophisticated as the Zappi GLO's surplus-only Eco+ mode, but it is more than the Zaptec offers, which is nothing on the solar front. If you have panels and want to divert excess generation to the car, the Hypervolt does the job; the Zaptec does not.

On tariff scheduling, both chargers let you set off-peak windows through their respective apps. Pair either with Octopus Go at 8.5p/kWh or EDF GoElectric at 6.99p/kWh and you will charge cheaply. Neither charger matches the Ohme Home Pro's half-hourly price optimisation on Octopus Agile — if that is your priority, the Ohme comparison is a better starting point.

UK phone support is another Hypervolt strength. Calls are answered quickly, by people in this country. Zaptec's installer network in the UK is smaller, and the app — while functional — is basic.

What the Zaptec is betting on

V2G — vehicle-to-grid — is the Zaptec Go 2's reason for existing at this price. It is an AC charger marketed as V2G-ready because it publishes ISO 15118 communication support. When the regulatory and commercial frameworks mature, a V2G charger could let your car export stored energy back to the grid during peak hours, earning you money or offsetting your bill. That is a real proposition. It is also, in spring 2026, a largely theoretical one for most households.

The MID-approved energy meter is useful today. It provides legally certified readings — handy if you claim business mileage or need to split energy costs in a shared property. The subscription-free 4G connectivity is similarly practical: no Wi-Fi signal at the far end of the drive? The Zaptec stays online regardless.

The five-year warranty edges the Hypervolt's standard three, though Hypervolt offers an extension to five for £100 — making the gap a £100 convenience fee rather than a structural difference.

If V2G interests you but the Zaptec's price does not, the Indra Smart PRO at £395 is also positioned as a V2G pioneer, albeit with different certification and a lower price tag. That comparison is worth a look.

The verdict

Buy the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro if:

  • You want a tethered charger with a cable already attached — up to 10 metres
  • You have solar panels and want basic diversion without buying extra kit
  • You value IP66 + IK10 build and responsive UK support

Buy the Zaptec Go 2 if:

  • V2G readiness is a deliberate part of your energy strategy, not idle curiosity
  • You need a MID-approved meter for business mileage or billing
  • You prefer untethered flexibility and built-in 4G without a subscription

For the majority of UK homes in 2026, the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro is the more useful charger. It does more today, protects itself better against the elements, and costs £13 less. The Zaptec Go 2 is not a poor product — it is a forward-looking one. But paying for a future that may still be years from arriving, while giving up a tethered cable, solar integration, and superior weatherproofing, is a trade most buyers should not make. Mount the Hypervolt. If V2G arrives and changes the calculus, the charger market will have moved on too — and so can you.
