The £49 gap hides a bigger question
These two chargers sit close on price — the Indra Smart PRO at £395, the GivEnergy EV Charger at £444. Both are tethered, single-phase, OZEV-approved, and carry three-year warranties. On paper, they look like siblings. They are not.
- GivEnergy EV Charger — a specialist tool for homes with battery storage. It can pull cheap overnight electricity from a home battery into the car. Without a battery, it's an ordinary 7kW charger with a basic app.
- Indra Smart PRO — a broad-value proposition. Cheaper unit price, included surge protection device, included CT clamp for solar, 6-metre cable. Does nothing exotic, but does the common things well and cheaply.
What the GivEnergy actually does — and when it doesn't matter
The GivEnergy's argument is battery-to-EV charging. If you have a home battery — GivEnergy's own or a compatible third-party unit — you can fill it overnight on a cheap tariff window like Octopus Go at 8.5p/kWh, then discharge it into the car the next afternoon. Most chargers can only divert live solar; the GivEnergy can draw from stored energy. That distinction matters if your car isn't home during peak solar hours.
Strip the battery away and the picture changes entirely. At £444 you get a 7kW charger with a 5-metre cable, Wi-Fi connectivity, RFID access, and an app that is — to be direct — basic. No live tariff API, no dynamic load balancing, no surge protection in the box. The VCHRGD Seven Pro at £430 offers more features per pound. The Rolec EVO at £356 undercuts it with a five-year warranty. Without a battery, the GivEnergy is adrift in a crowded mid-range.
The Indra's quiet install-cost advantage
The Indra Smart PRO ships with a surge protection device and a CT clamp for solar diversion. Neither is glamorous. Both save money.
An SPD fitted separately by your electrician typically adds £100–£150 to the install bill. A CT clamp for solar, another £50–£100. Factor those in and the Indra's effective unit cost drops to somewhere around £150–£250 — which is remarkable for a charger with smart tariff scheduling, dynamic load balancing, RFID tracking, and a 6-metre cable. That extra metre over the GivEnergy's 5-metre tether matters more than it sounds; it's the difference between reaching the charge port comfortably and not.
The Indra's app won't trouble the Ohme Home Pro for sophistication, and its installer network is smaller than the big names. But it supports schedule-based integration with Octopus Intelligent Go, Octopus Go, OVO Charge Anytime, and EDF GoElectric. For a £395 charger, that is a respectable list.
One note on the V2G branding: Indra is a pioneer in vehicle-to-grid technology, but the Smart PRO itself does not support V2G. The pedigree is real; the feature is not present here.
Neither charger is the smartest — and that's fine
Both the GivEnergy and the Indra use schedule-based tariff management. Neither talks to your supplier's API in real time the way an Ohme Home Pro does. On a fixed-window tariff like Octopus Go, that doesn't matter — you set the timer once and forget. On a half-hourly variable tariff like Octopus Agile, both chargers are out of their depth. If Agile is your tariff, this is the wrong comparison; the Ohme at £539 earns its premium there.

Buy the GivEnergy EV Charger if:

For most households — the ones without a bank of lithium cells in the garage — the Indra Smart PRO is the more sensible purchase. It costs £49 less to buy, saves a further £100–£250 at install, charges at 7.4kW rather than 7kW, and comes with a longer cable. The GivEnergy is a fine charger inside its own ecosystem. Outside it, the Indra is the one to fit.
