Two chargers buying two different futures

The GivEnergy EV Charger costs £444 and exists to do one thing no mainstream rival matches: pull stored energy from a home battery into your car. The Zaptec Go 2 costs £638 — £194 more — and exists to do one thing no other AC home charger in the UK can yet claim: participate in vehicle-to-grid energy trading once the infrastructure catches up.

Neither is a general-purpose recommendation. Both are specialist tools priced for buyers who already know what they need.

  • GivEnergy — a £444 tethered charger whose battery-to-EV mode is the entire argument. Without a home battery, it is ordinary.
  • Zaptec Go 2 — a £638 untethered unit with V2G-readiness label, a MID-approved meter, and subscription-free 4G. Without faith in the V2G timeline, it is expensive for what it does today.

The GivEnergy case: stored energy, not just live solar

Most solar-compatible chargers divert surplus generation in real time — the myenergi Zappi GLO is the standard-bearer for that. The GivEnergy does something different. It talks to your home battery system, draws cheap overnight electricity you stored at 8p or 8.5p/kWh on tariffs like Octopus Go, and feeds it to the car during the day. That is a meaningful trick if your daily driving pulls 8–10 kWh and your battery has capacity to spare.

The integration works with GivEnergy's own batteries and a growing list of compatible third-party units, all visible through the GivEnergy monitoring portal. For whole-home energy management — solar, battery, EV — it is a tidy single-vendor stack.

The catch is everything else. The app is basic next to an Ohme Home Pro or Hypervolt Home 3 Pro. There is no live supplier API, only schedule-based charging. The cable is 5 metres. The warranty is three years. Strip away the battery integration and you have a competent but unremarkable 7kW tethered charger — at which point the VCHRGD Seven Pro at £430 or the Sync Energy Wall Charger 2 at £400 offer more for less. The Zaptec case: paying now for a grid that doesn't exist yet

V2G — sending energy from your car back to the grid and getting paid for it — is the promise. The Zaptec Go 2 publishes ISO 15118 communication support, but Zaptec says it cannot currently be registered as a UK V2G installation. The MID-approved energy meter inside it produces legally valid readings, which matters if you ever bill an employer, a landlord, or a grid services aggregator. The built-in 4G is subscription-free. OCPP 1.6J compliance means it can slot into third-party energy management platforms without vendor lock-in. The five-year warranty is two years longer than the GivEnergy's.

All of that is real. The problem is timing. UK V2G services for AC chargers remain nascent. You are spending £638 on hardware whose headline feature may not be exercisable for a year, or two, or more. If V2G does arrive within the warranty window, the Go 2 is positioned perfectly. If it doesn't, you have an untethered 7.4kW charger with a decent app and not much else to show for the premium.

Tethered vs untethered — a practical fork

This pair splits on form factor too. The GivEnergy is tethered with a 5-metre Type 2 cable permanently attached. The Zaptec is untethered — you supply your own cable. Tethered is more convenient for a single-car household with a dedicated parking spot. Untethered suits shared driveways or households with multiple EVs using different cables. Neither offers the other option, so this alone may settle the decision for some buyers.

Which to buy

Buy the GivEnergy EV Charger if:

  • You have a GivEnergy or compatible home battery and want to charge the car from stored cheap-rate electricity
  • You prefer a tethered cable and a simple, single-vendor energy stack
  • You want to spend £444, not £638, and the battery integration is the feature you actually use

Buy the Zaptec Go 2 if:

  • You believe V2G will be operational in the UK within the next few years and want the only AC charger certified for it
  • You need an untethered socket, three-phase readiness, or a MID-approved meter for billing
  • The five-year warranty and subscription-free 4G matter more to you than saving £194

For most buyers without a home battery or a need for the Zaptec's MID meter, three-phase support and 4G, neither charger is the right pick — the Ohme Home Pro at £539 or the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro at £625 will do more day to day. If you have the battery, the GivEnergy earns its place. Treat the Zaptec's possible future V2G participation as unpriced optionality, not a guaranteed upgrade path.
